Set in Tuscany, 1944, south of the Gothic line, as conflict intensifies between German and Allied forces, the desecrated body of a woman is found drowned. LKAs expertise for delving into complex and riveting subject matter that borrows from both fact and fiction helps to distinguish its development pedigree and passion. There are some good ideas here that deserved to be in a better game, but as it stands right now, Martha is Dead is a frustrating experience that fails to do justice to those ideas.Martha is Dead continues LKA’s signature style of deep multi-layered narratives combined with real locations and a mix of history, superstition and psychological distress. The setting is beautiful and lovingly crafted, but actually playing the game often feels like a chore for one reason or the other. The narrative premise is unique and makes its distinct elements work together surprisingly well, but it’s pacing might very well turn you away if you don’t have the patience (or inclination) to stick with it. Thoughts- Martha Is Dead has a lot going for it, but it often gets in its own way. I am waiting for the game to pick up the pace but it never seems too. It feels so slow-paced even for an atmospheric horror game. There are weird moments in the game and sections that just are not fun or scary and feel pointless. One of the best looking indie horror games that I have seen in years. The setting feels really authentic and immerses me in it's world. The setting feels really Good- The narrative's premise and the story it sets up is one of the most inriguing I have played in years.
